Nigeria July 29,1966 Counter Coup Is Africa’s Bloodiest Coup d’état

The first shots shattered the peace of the night at the Abeokuta Garrison of the Nigerian Army a few minutes after midnight on July 29, 1966. Three casualties lay instantly dead in the persons of Lieutenant Colonel Gabriel Okonweze, the Garrison Commander, Major John Obienu, Commander of the 2nd Reece Squadron, and Lieutenant E. B. Orok, also of the Reece Squadron. It was the beginning of the much-touted revenge coup of Northern Nigerian army officers and men against the regime of Major General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi.

Minister Lauds Fidson On New Factory

3 Killed,Customs Officer injured As Yoruba, Hausa Residents Clash In Lagos

Three persons were shot dead yesterday, during a shootout between hoodlums and some officers attached to the Federal Operations Zone A, Ikeja, of the Nigerian Customs Service, NCS, at White Sand community in Ijora Badia area of Lagos State. Three others, among who was a Customs officer, also sustained gunshot injuries. Trouble started, Monday, following a clash between Hausa and Yoruba residents over accusation by the latter that the former had been terrorising the area. A resident, Tajudeen Shamsudeen, explained that a boy, identified as Ojo, said to be on his way home, was allegedly stabbed to death by some Hausa boys. Shamsudeen said: “For long, these Hausa boys have been attacking people here. They waylay people, dispose them of cash and belongings. Even rulers of both ethnic groups are aware of the issue.” The attack on Ojo, according to him, sparked a riot during which dangerous weapons were freely used by both parties. About 1, 447 Pipeline Attacks In 2016 According To NNPC Records

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said yesterday that it recorded about 1,447 incidences of pipeline vandalism across the country resulting in the loss of millions of litres of products worth billions of naira in 2016 alone. NNPC’s Group Managing Director, Dr Maikanti Baru disclosed this when he paid a courtesy call on the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Gabriel Olonisakin in his office. According to Baru, “In 2015, Nigeria lost 643 million litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) valued at N51.3 billion through pipeline vandalism alone. MAN. UNITED have locked down a world record £105million transfer fee deal with Juventus for midfielder Paul Pogba. IMF Warns Nigeria Heading Towards Recession

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele on Tuesday gave conflicting prognoses of the Nigerian economy, with the fund forecasting that the Nigeria economy was likely to contract by 1.8 per cent this year, warning that it was heading towards recession. Emefiele, on the other hand, during a closed-door briefing with the Senate, informed the upper legislative chamber that the economy was suffering from stagflation. A recession is defined as a significant decline in activity across the economy, lasting longer than a few months. It is visible in industrial production, employment, real income and wholesale-retail trade.                                  

HRW Says 34 People Missing In Terror Crackdown

At least 34 people have mysteriously disappeared and 11 others were killed in what is suspected to be the coordinated work of local security forces, a new report by a human rights watchdog has revealed. Witness statements collected by Human Rights Watch (HRW) indicate that all the 45 victims may have been under investigation for alleged links to Al-Shabaab.

Kenya Sees Dramatic Rise In HIV Infections, Study Shows

Kenya has been cited as one of the countries with “stubborn” HIV new infections. Kenya’s rate of new HIV infections has risen steadily over the past decade, more dramatically than in other countries, a study has shown. Beyond Kenya, the world faces “significant challenges” in ending the Aids epidemic by 2030. According to the study, more than 1.8 million Kenyans were living with HIV in 2015, and 39 per cent were on anti retroviral therapy drugs to slow the disease’s progression.

Yahoo Fails To Reveal Buyer, Suffers £332m Loss In Q2

Yahoo has failed to update investors on the sale of its core internet business as it revealed it suffered a £332 million loss in its second quarter. Instead, CEO Marissa Mayer said that “progress” has been made on its strategic alternatives but failed to define what that subjective term meant. Yahoo saw a rise in revenue to $1.3 billion (£1bn) in the second quarter, with mobile revenue growing from £252 million to $378 million (£287m).
