Dalian Atkinson, Former Aston Villa Striker, Dies After Taser Shot By Police

A man who died after he was shot by police with a Taser gun has been named locally as ex-Aston Villa footballer Dalian Atkinson, according to the Press Association.
Officers were called to a home in Meadow Close, Telford in the early hours of Monday morning amid concerns "for the safety of an individual".

West Mercia Police said the 48-year-old man was given medical treatment after being Tasered but died around 90 minutes later.

An ambulance spokesman said while he was being taken to Princess Royal Hospital in the Shropshire town his condition deteriorated and he suffered a cardiac arrest.

He was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility and it has since been reported the individual concerned was Atkinson.

The former striker is best remembered for scoring Villa's opening goal in their 1994 League Cup final win over Manchester United at Wembley.
He also won the first Premier League Goal of the Season prize for a fine individual effort for Villa against Wimbledon in the 1992/93 campaign.

Although he was never capped by England, Atkinson did play in one B international and scored his team's goal in a 4-1 defeat to the Republic of Ireland in Cork in 1990.

Atkinson's other clubs included Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday, Real Sociedad, Fenebahce and Manchester City.
Wednesday tweeted their condolences, saying: "The thoughts of everyone at Wednesday are with the friends and family of Dalian Atkinson this morning. RIP."

Current Villa midfielder Jack Grealish also took to social media to say: "RIP Dalian Atkinson. Loved watching videos of him & always remember his great goal vs Wimbledon. My thoughts are with his family & friends."

The police use of Tasers is intended as a non-lethal weapon. The incident has now been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
Police said in a statement: "West Mercia Police can confirm that officers responded to a report for the concern for the safety of an individual at approximately 1.30am this morning at an address in Telford.

"Upon arrival Taser was deployed and a 48-year-old man, who subsequently received medical attention, was pronounced dead at approximately 3am.

"West Mercia Police are unable to comment any further as the incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as is normal procedure, and will assist the IPCC with their inquiries."
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We were called by West Mercia Police to an address in Meadow Close in the Trench area of Telford at about 1.45am this morning.

"An ambulance was dispatched and upon arrival found a man who had been Tasered.

"As he was being conveyed to Princess Royal Hospital, his condition deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest.
"Despite the efforts of the crew and hospital staff, it was not possible to save him and he was confirmed dead at hospital, shortly after arrival."

The police use of Tasers rose slightly towards the end of 2015 with 10,329 uses by forces in England and Wales - a two per cent increase compared with 2015.

Floods Leave Many Dead in Southern Ghana

Four days of heavy and steady rain has left at least 10 people dead in the south of Ghana. The streets of Accra have been left under water after the torrential downpours caused widespread flooding earlier this week. The nation's capital was hit bit 185mm of rain on Sunday, which is more than they would expect for the entire month of June. This is the wettest month of the year with an average rainfall of 178mm. Since the weekend a further 50mm of rain has fallen exacerbating the severe problems already faced. President John Dramani Mahama has surveyed the areas concerned. He was reported to have driven through several neighbourhoods on a motorcycle. Heavy downpours were also recorded 150km to the west of Accra in the Central Regional capital, Cape Coast where 10 people died in floods,  Sandy Amartey, regional coordinator of the National Disaster Management organisation, told AFP. "In all we have 10 to 12 who lost their lives during this rainy season." The rain...

EC Slaps Apple With £11bn Irish Tax Bill

The European Commission (EC), as expected, has ordered the Irish government to recover up to €13 billion (£11bn) plus interest in “illegal tax benefits”. An investigation found Apple had been able to avoid taxation on almost all profits generated in the EU single market thanks to a structure which routed revenues through two “paper” headquarters in Ireland and minimal tax rates in the country. The EC says Apple only paid an effective corporate tax rate that fell from one percent in 2003 to 0.005 percent in 2014 – a rate which other companies in Ireland were not subjected to. This effectively amounted to state aid, the commission said. Apple tax amazon“Member States cannot give tax benefits to selected companies – this is illegal under EU state aid rules,” said Commissioner Margrethe Vestager, who is in charge of competition policy. “The Commission’s investigation concluded that Ireland granted illegal tax benefits to Apple, which enabled it to pay substantially less tax than ...
